Grand River: Grand Ledge to Charlotte Highway, May 11

We’ll meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the boat launch area next to the dam at Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge (stay to the left and follow the road down the big hill to the river). There is a $3 fee for a day pass for the park and if no one is in the toll booth you’ll need correct change for the envelope. We’ll run shuttle down to Charlotte Highway (maps will be provided) and then we’ll launch. This is a recreational trip of about 12 miles and will take about 4 hours. There will be a lunch stop in the middle of the trip. Bring a lunch/snacks/water bottles. A life jacket must be worn and properly fastened. You must sign a trip waiver if you haven’t done so already for 2013. Click here to email the trip coordinator for more information (blog [at] loapc [dot] org)

Portage Park Paddlefest August 11

Shiawassee River, Henderson Park to Ditch Road, June 16

We’ll meet at Henderson Park north of Owosso at 9:00 a.m., run shuttle, and paddle about 9 miles down to the old Parshallburg Mill Dam site off Ditch Road. This is an easy route with no portages or obstacles to avoid, although the old mill pond at the end of the trip will be slow going due to duckweed growth. There will be a lunch stop along the way. More details when you RSVP. PFDs must be worn while on the water. If you haven’t signed a trip waiver for the 2012 season, I’ll have forms available at the put-in. Please RSVP, loretta [at] loapc [dot] org.

June 15, 2012, 3-5 p.m. at the Clinton County Courthouse boardroom in St. Johns (RSVP by June 12)

MGROW recently obtained tax-exempt status and wants to expand its mission beyond conducting the GRE every 10 years. We want to bring together local communities, watershed groups, and other stakeholders in the Middle Grand watershed toward a greater understanding of and stewardship for the river.

The meeting is open to local watershed groups, educators, governmental agencies, and any individuals with an interest in protecting and preserving our part of the Grand.

To RSVP, send an e-mail to reception [at] mitcrpc [dot] org, or call Kathy at 517-393-0342. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Dobie Road Bridge closed til October

The Dobie Road Bridge over the Red Cedar in Okemos is already closed at water level as of mid May 2010. Catch nets have been placed across the upstream and downstream channels, apparently to keep debris from falling into the river during construction. There is no downstream passage during the construction.

My May 29 Red Cedar trip from Van Atta Road to Ferguson Park is canceled, and no more Red Cedar trips will be scheduled on this stretch until the bridge repair is finished in mid October. The bridge will close to vehicle traffic in both directions starting June 11.
