Learn River Kayaking A to “W”

“W”hitewater, that is. This course is intended to teach students the fundamentals of safely paddling moving water and novice-level whitewater rivers. The class is appropriate for both paddlers with some experience who want to try a new type of paddling activity, and for eager beginners who are interested in trying river paddling. Five Wednesday evening sessions will be held in the classroom and the pool. Classes will focus on river kayaking strokes and maneuvers, recovery skills (balance, bracing and rolling), safety & rescues, appropriate gear and clothing, and trip planning. Pool classes are followed by two all-day Saturday trips to local rivers.

All equipment is provided. Students should be comfortable in the water and bring a towel and swimsuit. A synthetic top for warmth and water shoes are recommended. Each class starts with one hour “dry” classroom subjects, followed by one hour on the water instruction and one hour free practice time in the pool. More information about the river trips will be presented in the classroom.

TIME: 6:00 – 9:00 pm.

COST: $150

LOCATION: East Lansing High School pool, Wednesdays April 9, 16, 23, 30 and May 7; all day river trips Saturdays May 10 & 17 location TBA.
