Batchawana River June 2013

Well it’s been a while since we have been up to the Batchawana River in Ontario considering all of the other rivers we have been running during that time.  It is one of my favorites in that the river acts like a river rather than a bunch of connected lakes we see inland and further north.

The Mile 38 Road we use for access is deteriorating due to lack of maintenance so this may be the last road trip in and we could be stuck with the train in the future to get into Batchewana Station.

The weather and water levels were awesome as we got underway.  It is only a few klicks to the first portage past the ACR trestle so we decided to have lunch below the falls on a sand bar.

We travelled about 12 klicks  downstream through the fun spashy rapids:

We camped at a wonderful gravel bar and enjoyed the rest of the day.

The next morning we continued downriver past the Chain Lake falls and the portage at The Gate.  This portage is always being overgrown due to a small spring coming down the hillside so it takes a little dragging around to get through it.

We saw a moose family as we progressed downstream after the portage:

Camp was made at the Tribeg Mine Road falls for the end of our second day.

Our final day we moved smoothly downstream to Batchawana falls and canyon.  The portage is long but easy along the old mine road.

After one more portage around the fifth and final falls, and a few more fun splashy rapids. it was just a peaceful float out through the quiet water to Batchawana Bay and Hwy 17.
