Spring Kayak Classes

If you or anyone you know is interested in taking kayaking classes, please pass this along. These classes fill up fast, so respond soon if you are interested. Remember that free open pool time for community members is always available the last hour of class pool time, from 8-9pm. Hope to see you there.

LAINST Kayaking Classes

Spring 2013 at the East Lansing High School pool.

Kayaking classes are taught by American Canoe Association trained and certified instructors. All equipment is provided. Students should be comfortable in the water and bring a towel and swimsuit. A synthetic top for warmth and water shoes are recommended. Each class starts with one hour “dry” classroom subjects, followed by one hour on the water instruction and one hour free practice time. Kayaking II: Tipping, Staying Upright, & Rolling

This three evening course is for students with some kayaking experience with basic strokes who want to work on rescues, recovery skills (balance, edging, and braces) and learn how to roll.

6:00 – 9:00 pm. $75. Wednesdays April 10, 17 & 24.

River Kayaking

This course is intended to teach students the fundamentals of safely paddling moving water and whitewater rivers. Two Wednesday class sessions will be held in the classroom and the pool, focusing on safety, river kayaking maneuvers, rescues, and trip planning. The third class will be an all-day trip to a local river; the fourth class will be an all-day trip to a slightly more challenging local river. Students taking this course should have taken Kayaking I &II or the equivalent.

6:00 – 9:00 pm. $125. Wednesdays May 1 & 8; all day river trips Saturdays May 11 & 18.
