Grand Island open water kayaking and backcountry camping, July 28-30.

Grand Island open water kayaking and backcountry camping, July 28-30. See for more information about the island, which is 1 mile offshore from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. You need a kayak with two sealed bulkheads and enough capacity to carry camping gear and food for two nights, and proper paddling clothing for cold water immersion. Contact me at the de-spammed email below for a list of other recommended and required gear. Participants must have the skills and endurance to travel 12 miles per day in winds up to 15 knots and waves up to 2 feet. If weather permits we will cross to the island Saturday morning and camp out two nights, finishing at the group campsite in Murray Bay, allowing a fairly protected crossing back on Monday. A club member has graciously offered the use of their family cottage in Munising as a rendezvous for Friday night, and as a base in case of bad weather. You must email me directly at savage(ampersand)msu(dot)edu to reserve your spot, get your skills and gear checked out, and get final details and location. Maximum group size is 10, including me and Todd.
