Les Cheneaux Islands Trip

There will be a paddling trip to the Les Cheneaux Islands September 17 – 20, 2009.  The plan is to meet Thursday evening, September 17, at Cedarville RV Park and Campground in the U.P.  From Jct. I-75 and Hwy M-134 (Exit 359 Cedarville-Hessel Les Cheneaux Isl.) Go E. 17 miles thru Cedarville blinker to Bay St. go 1 block S. to Grove St. Watch for signs.

On Friday morning we will launch from a public boat launch and paddle over to Government Island.  There we will set up a base camp for the rest of the weekend.  There will be more paddling Friday afternoon and Saturday, with everyone returning to Government Island each day to camp.  Sunday, September 20 we will make preparations to pack up, paddle out, and return home.

This trip is for beginners as well as more advanced paddlers, in canoes and kayaks alike.  The Islands offer protection from the open waters of northern Lake Huron and allow for a leisurely paddle under most circumstances.  More adventurous paddlers can circumnavigate the various islands or venture out into Lake Huron as they choose.

There is no script for paddling during this trip, so except for the journey from the boat launch to Government Island, route planning will be done based on the participants and weather.  Be sure and bring appropriate raingear, clothing,  tent, sleeping bag, and food for the weekend.

  1. Jay, when you go through Hessel, There is a nice little local outfitter shop on the Rt side, on a corner (not sure of the street) Woods and Water Eco Tours, Stop in and say hi to Jesse Hadley. Nice gal, runs a nice operation. Tell her Randy sent you…

  2. Further update on details: I did not make any reservations in Cedarville so we will just roll in and meet up there. I plan on being there about 9:00 p.m. on Thursday night. Friday we will move on to the boat launch.
There is a $5.00 per day parking fee per vehicle at the boat launch, but no camping fees on the island. Fires are allowed on Government Island and toilet boxes exist in some areas. Please bring appropriate backcountry toilet items nonetheless (trowel, hand sanitizer, etc.).

  3. I may be later coming up on Thursday night than I wish, but I will be there nonetheless. We have at least one paddler meeting us on Friday morning in the campground at 9:00 a.m. I called the campground and told them we were coming….

  4. A wonderful trip. A great place to explore & the weather committee did an outstanding job.

While we were there the conversation turned to topo maps. Here’s a link to the Paddling.net article that led me to the USGS site:
