I will be presenting photos from 2011 highlighting destinations and LOAPC members on the water from February to August. You don’t want to miss this if you paddled during that time or are looking for future places to go!

The meeting is at Jimmy’s Pub in East Lansing at 7:00 pm on Tuesday February 21. Please arrive early to order food prior to the meeting!

31st Annual Au Sable River Overnight

The 31st Annual ASRO will be taking place as scheduled on February 18-19 , 2012 on the Au Sable River. The rendezvous Saturday morning the 18th is at the Big Boy Restaurant in Grayling at 8:30 a.m. From there we will unload at Old Au Sable Fly Shop (formerly Ray’s canoe livery) on the river and run shuttle down to Parmalee and check for ice at the landing. We should be launching on the river by 11:30 a.m.

We will be camping overnight so everyone going needs to be an experienced winter camper as well as an experienced paddler. We have had night time lows down to -20 degrees but the average is typically around +10 degrees but that is still cold without the proper equipment.

All paddlers are responsible for their own actions, equipment, emergency gear, and clothing as this is a self-guided and self-equipped trip.

Meet at Kruger Landing on the Red Cedar River and Aurelius Road at 10:00 am on Sunday January 1 2012 for a 2 hour paddle excursion. We will either go upstream to the Kalamazoo Street Bridge (maybe a little further) and then float back to the Landing, or run a shuttle downstream to the Brenke Fish Ladder and float down into the Grand River.

DescriptionMeet time: 11:00 am at the Proud Lake Boat Launch off Bass Lake Rd (green arrow on map).
Skill Level: Intermediate, Difficulty rating: Moderate
Paddle the Huron River from Proud Lake to Central Park in Milford. There is one portage on the route. The distance is approximately 5 miles on one lake and some moving water.
Potluck lunch at Central Park Pavilion after the paddle. Please bring a dish to pass.
Shuttle run prior to paddle. This is a cold water paddle, no children or pets please. If leaving your car at the put in location, a state park pass is required.

November Club Meeting and Pizza Party

We will be having our November Club Meeting on Tuesday November 15 at 7:00 pm at Jimmy’s Pub in East Lansing. We are asking for a $5 donation to help cover ordering pizza for everyone with the Club picking up the balance. Drinks are seperate.

Kayak Classes and Open Pool Times

Hey paddlers,

Maybe you are interested in a pool class, or know someone who is – please share this information.

LAINST kayak classes fall 2011 at East Lansing High School pool:

Kayaking classes are taught by American Canoe Association certified instructors. All equipment is provided. Students should be comfortable in the water and bring a towel and swimsuit. A synthetic top for warmth and water shoes are recommended. Each class starts with one hour “dry” classroom subjects, followed by one hour on the water instruction and one hour free practice time. Kayaking I: Paddle Safe, Paddle Right

This three-session course will introduce you to kayaking in a safe and warm environment and help you develop basic skills and safety awareness. You will learn about boats and gear and how to maneuver your boat with basic strokes.

6:00 – 9:00 pm. $70. Wednesday November 9, 16, and 30 (no class Thanksgiving week)

Kayaking II: Tipping, Staying Upright, & Rolling

This two evening course is for students with some kayaking experience who want to work on recovery skills (balance, edging, and braces) and learn how to roll.

6:00 – 9:00 pm. $40. Wednesday December 7 & 14.

Also, there is free pool practice time from 7 – 9 pm (no instruction) if you have your own boat. Our classes depend on volunteers for equipment and help, so if you have a boat you can lend or would like to help out, please let us know.

There will be open pool paddling time at the East Lansing High School pool on Wednesday November 2 from 7-9 pm. There is no class this night; just show up for some fun and practice in the pool. The pool is really big, so any kind of boat is OK. Enter the high school by the west drive (not the football one) and continue around to the left all the way, for access. There will be a limited amount of extra boats and paddles. We will be passing the hat to help defray the cost of the pool, so if you can donate a few bucks, that would be a big help.

Also, on class nights throughout fall 2011, there is free pool practice time from 7-9 pm if you have your own boat. Our classes depend on volunteers for equipment and help, so if you have a boat you can lend or would like to help out, please let us know, 517-333-9716 or lainstkayaking@gmail.com, or if you have any questions.
