Linda and I are going sea kayaking up at the Garden Penninsula in the UP.  If you don’t know where it is, look at Lake Michigan between Manistique and Escanaba.
 
We’re planning to drive up Friday night (2-Oct), pack and paddle to somewhere for overnight camping (weather permitting) on Saturday (3-Oct), and paddle then drive back on Sunday (4-Oct).
 
Weather is the big variable.  If it’s good, we might paddle out to Poverty Island or even as far as St. Martin’s island.  If it’s bad, we might just paddle in the bay at Fayette State Park, or on the east side of the pennisula, depending on the wind direction.  In any case, we expect fall colors, no bugs, few people.

We are planning a trip to paddle the coast of the Land Between the Lakes Recreation area – Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley – in Kentucky & Tennessee in late October-early November. 

This is a trip suitable for any paddler who can make some distance (average 17 miles a day).  We don’t expect to have any weather issues since the lakes are very protected, so any type of craft good for long camping trips would be suitable.  The total trip distance is about 85 miles. 

Proposed schedule:  Wed. Oct. 28:  travel.  Google maps says the trip takes about 9 hours.  Thurs. Oct. 29 – travel, shuttles, begin trip at Boswell Landing boat launch area, southwest end of the park.  Friday, Oct. 30 – Mon. Nov. 2:  travel around the entire coast, stopping at various campgrounds.  A couple campgrounds actually have hot showers!!!  Hiking opportunities, too.

Tues. Nov. 3 – end trip early in the day at Gatlin Point campground landing, southeast end of the park, drive home. 

Expect daytime temps 50-60 degrees, cold nights, and nice fall colors.  We checked all the hunting dates and timed the trip to avoid the hunting seasons.

The Friends of the Looking Glass organization has published a 24-page, laminated and spiral bound Rivertrail Guide that contains historical information, color photos on the river and maps and information on six optional river trips of varying lengths. Starting upstream from Babcock Landing on the east and running downstream to Portland on the west, the rivertrail guide is intended for canoe, kayak and tube float trips.

Inspired by the Michigan Heritage Watertrail Initiative, FLG President Gloria Miller designed and drafted the guide; Doreen Fritz, DeWitt Schools Librarian provided the typography, and Gary Fritz and John Switzer from the Clinton Conservation District supplied the electronic layout and the maps, respectively. Miller said: “It’s been a great summer for paddlers on the Looking Glass due to the exceptional water volume in the river all year long — we got dozens of inquiries for the rivertrail guide before it even went to press.” She added: “It’s a true guidebook — it’s laminated with heavy plastic so it’s water proof and intended to be put right in the kayak or canoes and taken along on float trips.”

Sponsors from Wacousta, DeWitt and St. Johns made the first printing possible. Proceeds go to FLG’s general fund to help support the group’s work. The group sponsors two regional educational events each year, clears logjams and trash from the river, conducts water sampling and aquatic studies with school children, and promotes stewardship and safe, recreational use of the Looking Glass River.

The guides are available for $10 and can be purchased at Harlow’s Canoe Livery and the Wacousta General Store in Wacousta, at Sam’s Kitchen in DeWitt and from any Friends of the Looking Glass board member. Find the group’s activities by visiting www.lookingglassriverfriends.org

Hi Everyone! I wanted to let you all know about a small paddle trip we have going next week. In our efforts to raise money for the Verlen Kruger Memorial ( www.VerlenKrugerMemorial.org ) we have been organizing paddle trips/challenges that give folks a chance to get out and do some traveling.

Entry fees are small so we don’t make much on them, but we hope that in our travels we can get the word out on what we are doing and see if we might be able to drum up a few brick sales or donations. Next weeks trip will take us across the state of Michigan by way of the Au Sable and Manistee Rivers.
